documentations and softwares, 17 May. 2013 17:30

so ,
it‘s been nearly 3 months ,now , that i have been working with flip dot displays , and i have just discovered this website ( !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) .

i have a few questions .

i‘m a french multimedia artist , "new tehnologies" oriented .
i have found a Hanover Displays 96x16 flip dot front sign , and immediately decided to try to control it , in order to use it in my works .

i have spent dozens of dozens of hours , trying to understand how it works , looking on the web for informations , documentations , ...

after some weeks of hard work , i have been able to develop a software that lets me print any graphic on it .
i‘m very happy with this achievement and want to go further on this .
one idea is to put several signs together , and make a big screen (i will let them in their housings i‘m ok with having some parts of my screen "unflippable") .
getting more displays is quite hard , getting all the same , only Hanover , won‘t be possible .
i have just got 2 sets of "Luminator Mega Max" front, side and rear signs , and have began working on it .
my actual problem is that i don‘t have any editing software for them , i only have a "french adapted" ODK , which seems to work fine , but i would like to get a software , that is much easier for me to work with , in order to understand what kind of serial message i will ave to send ,in order to be able to do the same i did on the Hanover one .
if someone , from you all , could give me some documentations and/or software ,
it would be extremely nice from you .

for the moment , i‘m woking on Luminator and Hanover , but i‘m sure i will get some other brands displays .
so , basically , i would say that i‘m interested in ANYTHING , concerning electronic documentations , communication protocols , manuals , controllers , .... from any brand .

my ultimate goal , if i manage to drive them electronically , is to do something like this
//www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3jkoIyJgoc

the work for this is very hard , this is not hacking , but using electronics made for this ,
but i want to push to the limits the displays i have , and maybe i could refresh 2 or 3 times in a second , that would be enough for me .
maybe i‘l be able to do the same .... ?

so , i can drive it, but it is dammmmmmn slow (1 frame per 2 seconds ~)

i‘m trying to use arduino in order to drive the electronics ,but i really need some help (docs and softs)

if some of you could help me in my researches , it would be really , really , awesome , for me .

i don‘t speak german at all ,
thanks for your english replies ,
if you can give me some advices ....

have a good day
Matthieu

EDIT//// i have just uploaded a quick demo of the sofware ---> //www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCx-pCPHCFI&feature=youtu.be ///// END EDIT

here are some of the Luminator boards i have and the french ODK controller (that seems to work fine .
as you can see , i have two of them ,i won‘t use them ,and i only need one to start working .if some collector here would be interested , i would be totally ok to let it go , in exchange of what i‘m looking for , don‘t hesitate if you‘re interested .

nobody interested ?
feel free to tell me if i‘m asking something wrong ,
or the wrong way ,
i find my proposition quite interesting ,...
anyway that‘s already fine i ‘ve found this site !

Hello,

nice work (so far) and a nice collection of signs. The only think I can say: SLE used the same FP dots as LAWO, in the past they even bought the complete flipdot signs from us, SLE was a company sister of LAWO. The Mark IV company sold SLE some years ago and decided to close FP elecetronics and the production of flip dots. So the signs will becoming rare.

I nearly sure that the Luminator ODK was never sold in the German market.

Es grüßt ganz herzlich

thanks a lot for the answer ,
that‘s interesing , i‘m about to get some 12 more Luminator signs (12 kits of 3 signs) during next summer ,
i‘ll definitely have to make it work !!!!
tomorrow , i‘m also going to get 20 other kits from a bus company that allows me to get it before destruction ,it should be Hanover
i‘m soooo happy !
thanks again for these infos , and , if anybody is interested , i‘m still needing softwares and docs , and still ok to send my french ODK to anybody that would help me in my quest of softwares and documentations .
cheers
Matthieu

I am currently also struggling with a flip dot display I am trying to connect a arduino mega 2560 to a XY5L Mark IV 14x28, there are two FP2800A and a connector of 26 pins, I dont know how to communicate with the FP2800A so if you find a solution please post or Email, I will also return if I find the answer. It is so cool flip flip.

RE: documentations and softwares, 14 Jun. 2013 00:39

ha haaaaa ,
yes we can talk !
i know the FP2800A as they‘re also used in previous versions of hannover displays ‘ board .
i have spent many hours on this , i have also begun to prepare a Mega2560 in order to drive it .
the problem , on the hannover board i have , is that it is (for the moment) too difficult for me , i haven‘t managed yet .
THE FP2800A : this cheap has 28 outputs , they can either give current or take current (i mean being the - side or the + side of the DC) this is selected with a pin called DATA .there are 4 or 5 other pins that deal with the selection of one of the 28 outputs.
be careful , it has to be an impulse : longer than (i can‘t remember now how many) some milliseconds , and the selected output(maybe the whole chip) is broken .
all this is described on the datasheet (i have found it via google , i‘m sure you to) .
i have established the whole path on the board (after weeeeeks spent with a metrix , a real pain in the a..) and written it on a multi-layered photoshop file . i have then started trying to figure out which of the 16 (power and TTL control) input pins on the board , had to be controlled this or that way , developped a MaxMsp patch ,programmed and cabled the Arduino , and finally tried some shots , but didn‘t manage .hopefully , i didn‘t burn the board (i suspect it to be so well conceived that it‘s hard to burn it).
a little discouraged , i went the "classic" RS232 way , worked hard again and developped a software that lets me print any dot i want (so , graphics) , using a simple USB to Serial adapter .
i can‘t be as fast as i would like to , but it prints 100% what i want .i‘m just feeling ok with this now .
all this took me 2 months of hard work , 18hours or so per day (i am no engineer at all , and i ‘m quite a freaking noob on C programming .
i have also started to get dozens of boards , so now i can be in the fun part of my project .
but i‘m still interested in driving the boards faster . i know i won‘t be able to drive it 30fps , the secret for this (maybe i‘m wrong) is in the electronics (1 board for ~ 30 or 50 dots maximum , which is horribly expensive) .
but 2 or 3 fps would be extremely cool for me .
i‘m quite busy by now , but still involved in all that stuff , it could be cool if we could co-work on the Arduino/TTL/FP2800A .
i think my problem was that the regulator wasn‘t pulsing its current when i was opening the doors .
you‘re right , flip flip ruly rules !
nice to meet you .

and oh , ihave nearly forgotten , i‘m still looking for documentations and softwares , concerning LUMINATOR driving .
cheers

Matthieu

Have you tried to use a different microprocessor than the AVR on the Arduino? If you are able to solder it (or have it soldered :) ) there are plenty of 144-pin LQFP ARM-s, which can be really fast (70-170 MHz) and could drive pretty many FP chips with some 80-90 GPIO outputs and you can use pin expanders, which give you even more GPIO pins.
The only problem is with logic levels - ARM-s are 3,3V so you would have to make 5V out of it.

hmmmmm ,
that ‘s very interesting !
i also know that i won‘t have the time to try to understand all you‘re saying these days .
but i‘ll sure have a look on it next week .
i‘m realising i must be wrong on my statement about the 30 or 50 dots maximum , in order to drive fast .also because i have seen this :
//www.youtube.com/watch?v=hx5X8ni0AmE
, which is extremely fast , only using a mega2560.
so , you‘re suggesting replacing the microprocessor on an arduino ? , or building a new circuit ?
it seems that a normal arduino mega2560 would do the job ...
i‘m very glad to read all this !
i‘ll be back next week , and go on it again .
Matthieu

RE: documentations and softwares, 01 Jul. 2013 20:21

hi ,
just to give some news ...
i have recently been able to get 17 kits of hanover boards ,
as you can imagine ,i have much work to connect all these together (and a little programming to !!!!) , i think it will take me 1 week or more , just to prepare all the hardware .
then will be a big fun time , starting to draw pictures and moving graphics .
guess what ?,
i‘m still excited !
i still need some software and documentation (yeah i know i should stop asking) for the Luminator/SLE boards , anything concerning this ... ... ...

oh , i was forgetting , i will look closer at modifying the electronics later , i‘m not good enough in electronics + don‘t have enough time (my face in the mirror just tells me this ) ,
i‘m not abandonning , but delaying , until a little later ,in order to be still alive .
thanks for all your answers/commitments , in my research ,it‘s cool .

Matthieu

Hi Joumik,

I‘m not sure, but you can ask ‘kien1989‘ maybe for some information about Luminator. I know he can program the signs, so maybe he has also some information/documentation for you.

I like your project, I can‘t wait when its finished to see the results
Got some Luminator/LAWO flip-dots boards too (which I can‘t program). May I can try it too, haha

i have had some private messages sent early in june ,and i just have thought about looking at the mailbox , i apologize to those who wrote to me .
be sure that i ‘ll have a look at it everyday , starting right now .

5 boards already multiplexed !
only 43 left .....

Hello,

Cool, funny the signs at that way. This are all SF-Products/Hanover signs?

The beginning is good, I guess you will make it faster later when everything is working smooth?

Nice! :)

hi ,
faster will be quite hard ...
sending the message ,
is already taking nearly 1 second !
then , the boards can‘t flip faster than this ,
due to the internal electronic design .
the money and time i would need to do so ,
would be higher than buying brand new , and fast , boards , like "Alfazeta" ones .
and these are very expensive !
i‘m afraid this is the fastest i can.

He need to contact FM InfoSystem GmbH for Russian font.

Had also contact with him.
